Created on Tuesday, December 04, 2012 Last Updated on Tuesday, December 04, 2012

Dr. Peter von Dadelszen, a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of British Columbia and a world authority on diagnosing and treating pre-eclampsia, has received the 2012 Knowledge Translation Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. von Dadelszen's research spans basic science, clinical research and health services evaluations. He and his trainees have published 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and he was the lead author for guidelines issued by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada for diagnosis and management of pre-eclampsia and for use of magnesium sulphate treatment prior to labor to prevent cerebral palsy. He also was a contributing author of the 2011 World Health Organization's guidelines for the prevention and treatment of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

Dr. von Dadelszen is also the principle investigator for the PRE-EMPT grant, which recently received an additional $17 million from the Gates Foundation, to run larger trials in Nigeria, Mozambique, Pakistan and India involving 130,000 expectant mothers at risk of developing preeclampsia. The Preeclampsia Foundation also participates in that project and was in Vancouver, BC, for the exciting announcement from the Gates Foundation.
