I'm the mother of 3 young adults now, ages 24, 22 and 18. :-)
I had preeclamsia and HeLLP syndrome with my first and last pregnancies (which are my 2 sons). I did not have those complications with my daughter (now age 22), but I did have "undiagnosed" gestational diabetes with her.
Pregnancy #1: I was "Borderline" Gestational diabetic with him, and carried him full term. My water broke and I was not having much in the way of contractions, so my doctor had me wait 24 hours and then I went into the hospital and they put me on pitosin to get my contrations going. I started going down-hill during labor. I started running a fever, so they checked me (and the baby once he was born) for strep B. We both tested positive. They started me on antibiotics thru my IV while in labor. The preeclamsia started in labor as well, but got worse right after delivery. Because of the strep B, they took my baby away and put him in the intensive care nursery and cultured him for strep B. While I was in the recovery room, I had the terrible headache and the pain in what I thought was my stomach (but was really my liver). I thought I was just instensely hungry, since I had not had anything to eat in such a long time. Ha Ha - I was begging the nurse to get me some crackers (which of course they did not!). Then they put me in ICU and put me on IV Mag Sulfate. I was there for 4 days. My poor baby had to have 14 days of 4 antibiotic shots a day in his little thighs. :-( But it probably saved his life! Strep B can kill an otherwise healthy newborn in 24 hours! (Now he is 6'4" and a college graduate.) :-)
Pregnancy # 2: My beautiful daughter. My first baby had weighed 6 lbs 7 oz. My second baby (my daughter) weighed 9 lbs, 9 0z. I am not a big woman. I am 5'5" and small boned and in between pregnancies weighed usually about 115 lbs. I had a different Dr. with my 2nd pregnancy. I kept telling him at my check-ups that my belly was a LOT bigger than it had been with my 1st pregnancy! AND that I had been "borderline" gestational diabetic with my first as well. I kept asking if I needed to do the blood test to check my blood sugar, and he kept saying "no, your urine sample is fine". SO, I had a really big baby girl who was blue when she was born!. (Although she was a fat baby, you'd never guess it now - She's 5'7" and weighs 115!) Yes, I had her vaginally - yes it was very hard!!! But - NO Preeclamsia or HeLLP syndrome!!!! :-)
Pregnancy #3: My wonderful surprise son! :-) This pregnancy started great, with NO morning sickness! :-) At the beginning of the 2nd trimester though, my blood pressure went up. (Oh yes, I was 36 yrs old at the time.) I was put on a BETA Blocker (I don't remember which one.). Shortly after that, I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I did not take any meds for that, but checked my blood sugar 4 times a day, and was very strict with my diet. I was put with "perinatal specialists" in a nearby city (where my parents lived), and told to take it very easy, although I was not put on strict bed rest. I moved in with my parents and my 2 older kids (then 6 & 4 yrs) went back and forth staying with me or my husband for the rest of my pregnancy. I had lots of ultrasounds done to see how the baby was doing. They were concerned for him and were afraid I would deliver him prematurely. He actually was only 2 weeks early! He weighed 5 lbs, 11 oz! He was very skinny (he still is!!!). :-) After we had been home from the hospital for a few days (about a week after delivery), I got a bad headache and decided to check my blood pressure. It was kinda high - I don't remember what now though. Then I got that same pain in my "stomach" (liver) that I had had after delivery of my first baby, when I had HeLLP. I called my doctor, and she told me to come on in to the hospital so she could check me out. I did, and she checked my liver functions and put me back in the hospital. I had HeLLP and Preeclamsia again, and was in the hospital for 4 days. The doctor came in and asked me to "PLEASE not have any more children - because my 3 children needed a mother!" My husband had a vasectomy.
Well - lots of people were praying for me with my pregnancies, and I thank God that I am still here and have been able to raise my children!!! :-) I LOVE being a mom!!!! :-)
Since then, I have continued to need blood pressure medications, which have had to be gradually increased over the years. (When my youngest son was 18 months old, and I was still breast feeding, I had anaphalaxis to peanuts and was in the hospital for 4 days. I had been taking a BETA Blocker, and the allergist they called in had a fit, saying that allergic people should NEVER take BETA Blockers because they cancel out the effects of anti-histamines which you need when you're having an allergic reaction!!!) Anyway, I have been pretty healthy since having my babies, other than having high blood pressure and lots of food allergies. I'm waiting to hear how my blood sugar is doing, I have had a series of respiratory infections (6 rounds of antibiotics in the last 3 months) and am wondering if I am getting diabetes. I was doing some research online as to health related stuff when I found this website. I hope my story might help someone and give them hope. Don't put off seeing the doctor if you have any symptoms - headache, pain in the stomach area, or elevated blood pressure - even if you've already gotten home from the hospital with your newborn! It happened to me!
