Other special guests this evening include Dr. Christopher Redman,. President of
the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, Dr.
Catherine Spong, Branch Chief, Pregnancy and Perinatology at the NIH's National
Institute of Child Health and Development.
We’ll also be honoring a very special contributor to the field of preeclampsia,
Dr. James M. Roberts, with the Hope Award for Lifetime Achievement. Dr. Roberts
is the founding director of the Magee-Womens Research Institute and professor
and vice chairman of research in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and
reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The
Foundation hopes to motivate the next generation of lifetime achievers through
the research grants that will be presented at Saving Grace: A Night of Hope
.
Every year, an estimated 76,000 mothers and half a million babies around the
world die from preeclampsia and related disorders of pregnancy. First
identified over 2,000 years ago, preeclampsia is the leading known cause of
premature births and one of the leading causes of maternal and infant death and
illness worldwide. In the Washington, DC metropolitan area an estimated 5700
pregnancies are impacted by preeclampsia and related disorders every year.
Thanks to the dedication and passion of people like Dr. Roberts and other
prominent figures, as well as the investment and commitment of industry leaders
like several of our event sponsors, there is hope.
Until a cure is discovered, however, the Preeclampsia Foundation will continue
to play a vital role in working to prevent needless death and disability due to
preeclampsia through education, awareness, support and advancing the research
agenda. It is the largest patient advocacy organization in North America
dedicated to this maternal health issue, and the Foundation’s online forum (www.preeclampsia.org)
has emerged as the world’s best source of peer-to-peer education and support.
Please join us in our efforts to support this important work. You will leave
the evening transformed by compelling stories of loss and hope; inspired by
stellar speakers; and enlightened about a disorder of pregnancy that robs too
many families of one of life’s greatest joys and has
confounded the medical profession for too long. And yet now, finally, hope
glimmers. You will be part of that hope.
