Amy Jo Brandstetter

My son: Garrett Anthony Brandstetter - born 8-25-00 at 35 weeks, 3 lbs, 15 oz.

I'll start a bit before my pregnancy...

I've had borderline high blood pressure since I was like 17 yrs old. (140/low 90's). My blood pressure remained borderline until Aug. 99 when I was finally put on meds after 3 elevated readings over 2 visits to the doctor's office. It took us over 2.5 yrs to conceive and I finally conceived my first month on clomid om December of 1999.

My OB/GYN told me at 8 weeks that she was pretty sure that I would end up with pre-eclampsia (chronic hypertension, family history, and overweight) and we'd watch it carefully. I started with visits every other week by 22 weeks or so... and by 28 weeks I was going in every week. I was in the week before August 6 (2000) and asked my OB if I could head up to my folks for a family reunion/baby shower. She gave me the clearance to go but said to keep my feet up and rest lots. I had a bp cuff and was in the habit of doing my own readings. My bp was a bit elevated the night of the 5th but I just relaxed and it came down some and when I got up the next morning it was fine. Well that day was the family reunion and I wasn't off my feet like I should have been (dumb me) anyway... the next day I was in my OB's office at 8:30 am and my blood pressure was 152/118 and so Dr. Martin sent me to the hosptial for monitoring and once there the dr. on call (I go to a group and have 7 drs) re he remained for 3 weeks. It wasn't until they had him out and were cleaning me out that they found the partial abruption (we never would have made it through labor... either of us) They sent my placenta in for testing but don't know why it stopped functioning or why the abruption. I do know that I certainly felt God's presence through those days and hours...

Garrett is doing awesome now ( Garrett, born 08/25/2000 ) and I've been trying to get my butt moving to lose some weight, hoping that will help for the next pregnancy. I really want another baby and so does Dan, my husband but my mom is really worried about it and it's just not her nature. We've decided to wait another 6-12 months to try again... I've been walking and started a yoga class too.

That's my story...
