Kathy
In 1999, while pregnant with my first child I got preeclampsia. And it
wasn't just that I went above and beyond preeclampsia I went eclamptic. I
had a full blown seizure and when I was rushed to the hospital my blood
pressure was 230/140. The next step was either a stroke, heartattack or
death for both of us. So that day I ended up having an emergency C-section
at 36 weeks.
My daughter was born at 3 pounds, 10 ounces and 16 inches long. She was a
small baby for being born only a month early. She should have been at least 2
pounds more at that gestation. But because my blood pressure had started to
raise up about the sixth month, and just keep steadly rising until I had my
daughter. The blood and nutrition supply wasn't able to get to her like it
should have, and thats why she was so small.
I put all of my faith in the
doctor I was seeing and just believed everything he said and did. But a lot
of my problems might not have happened or wouldn't have been so severe. But
as my blood pressure keeped rising and they found protein in my urine I had
the most extreme headaches, double vision and severe side aches but he just
keeped saying "well its not to bad next time if its up we will do something
about it." Well he never did until it did get bad.
I ended up reading a small
article on preeclampsia and noticed alot of the symptons. So I called the
doctors office and insisted on getting in right away. While sitting in the
waiting room is when I had the seizure. I was lucky it happened there because
my symptoms were so severe if I wouldn't have gotten immediate medical
attention, me or my little girl might not be here today.
Even after I had her
my blood pressure took awhile to go down. Everything turned out ok in the end
but I suggest that if anyone feels they are not getting the right medical
attention.
I am 20 weeks pregnant right now with my second child. I have a new
doctor now who is taking every precaution so it does not happen again. I'm
seeing a specialist also who is working with my doctor to make sure
everything is ok. So far, so good.
