Sarah Powell
My first pregnancy was fine, all things were going well, my bump wasn't huge
but I was a big girl myself so maybe it just didn't look big.
I had slight morning sickness at the start of the pregnancy, but that was
all, and or course my hands and feet swelled up, but that was all part of
the "fun" wasn't it?!
At 32wks I went for my regular checkups with my midwife at the doctors
surgery. Armed with my urine sample I saw her, had a quick check, said I was
feeling fine etc.. then she took my blood pressure. Apparently it was rather
high so she asked if maybe I had rushed to get to the appt, and would I just
sit for a short while and then she would take it again.
It didn't get any lower and she suggested that maybe I should go to the
hosp' so they could check things out.
Being rather naive I got my diary out as I was sure she meant in a weeks
time or so, but she actually mean to go to the hosp' right then!!
I got there and was monitored for blood pressure and foetal movements. Well
the fact is that I had never had movements; never seen an elbow or foot like
other women do, but that wasn't a worry for me as I knew no different.
The blood pressure stayed up and there was also protein in my urine.
I was kept in hospital for 2 weeks, which all seemed a bit strange as I felt
SO well. My blood pressure went up in the evenings and while I slept, so I
was given medication to bring it down.
At 34wks after a Doppler scan it was decided that the baby should be
delivered by c/section as it was no longer benefiting from being in the womb.
Mollie Elizabeth was born on April 28th 1998, weighing 4lbs2oz. I was allowed
to see her for a second then she was taken to the Baby Unit, closely followed
by my husband.
She was fed through a tube and was given mothers milk to help her grow.
Slowly the amount of food went up and the number of tubes went down.
