Preeclampsia Foundation Hosts Inaugural Event to Raise Awareness and Research Dollars for a Common Pregnancy Disorder with No Known Cure

Last Updated on Monday, September 26, 2005

SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 -  Friday, November 11, 2005, the Preeclampsia Foundation is hosting an inaugural event -- Saving Grace: A Night of Hope  - at the Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to raise money needed for preeclampsia education and research. Preeclampsia affects over 200,000 pregnant women and their babies each year, sometimes fatally. This evening gala starts at 6:00 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by dinner, a live auction, and live music. To register for Saving Grace: A Night of Hope or for more information, visit www.preeclampsia.org, or contact Jaime Nolan at (952) 252-3573.

"Saving Grace: A Night of Hope" is being inaugurated in memory of baby Grace, who was delivered prematurely at 27 weeks due to Preeclampsia. She weighed only one pound, 11 ounces. Unfortunately, Grace developed an infection that ultimately entered her blood stream and then her lungs. She went into cardiac arrest five times before dying on March 2, 2004.

"It was at that moment I knew I would dedicate my life to finding the cause of this horrible disease," said Jaime Nolan, mother of Grace. "We're producing this event in the hope that others don't have endure the painful loss of a baby or mother from a disease that has no known cause nor cure."

Affecting almost one in twelve pregnancies, Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during the second half of pregnancy or postpartum and affects both the mother and the unborn baby, sometimes fatally. It is characterized by high blood pressure, swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches, changes in vision and presence of protein in the urine. By conservative estimates, it is responsible for 76,000 maternal deaths and hundreds of thousands of infant deaths each year worldwide.
