Our
Mission
To stop preventable death and disability of mothers and babies by eliminating
delays in diagnosis, implementing the best known practices, developing new
practices, and helping women and their families through the impact of
preeclampsia.
What is the money raised for?
Walk proceeds will support foundation efforts to fund and
drive research, raise public and professional awareness, and provide support
and education for those whose lives have been touched by preeclampsia and other
hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
What is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia, formerly known as toxemia, is a disorder that occurs only during
pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn
baby. Preeclampsia occurs as often as breast cancer. Preeclampsia and other
hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading global cause of maternal and
fetal illness and death. By conservative estimates, these disorders are
responsible for 76,000 maternal deaths each year. Affecting at least 5-8% of
all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high
blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Additional signs and
symptoms may include swelling in the hands, feet, or face; sudden weight gain;
nausea or upper abdominal pain; headaches; and/or changes in vision; however,
some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.
How can I help? Please choose an option below . . .
1. Participate in a walk – go to
the “drop down box” below, find a walk near you and click on it – you’ll get
more information as well as a link to the registration page. You can walk for
just the registration fee or, better yet, register AND collect pledges and earn
prizes! The more pledges you collect; the more prizes you earn (click
here for pledge form ). Register online and use our Walk
with Me feature to invite other people you know to join you in the
walk or make a pledge to support your walk.
Form a team with your family, coworkers, club members, etc. and walk for just
the registration fee or compete against other teams to raise the most pledges.
Register online below and use our Walk with Me feature to recruit more
members to join your team. Remember, even if people cannot come out and walk
with you, they can, support the Foundation by making a donation, either on-line
(see below) or by making a pledge to support your team.
No Walk in Your Area? . . . come back; we’ll be adding new
walk sites. Or. . . .
2. Host a Friends and Family Walk (formerly called ‘Solo Walks’):
-- In addition to the larger, formal Preeclampsia Awareness Walks that
volunteers around the country are organizing, many others are conducting
“Friends and Family” (FAF) Walks which are designed to be smaller and more
“user friendly” for organizers. There is still time for you to organize a
Friends and Family Walk in your town,
3. Make a donation – If there is no walk near you and
you don’t want to organize one of the other types of events, BUT YOU DO WANT TO
HELP, click here
and make your contribution.
