With a professional life
committed to the non-profit sector, J. Thomas (Tom) Viall is a leader, a
communicator, a fund raiser, and a doer. Much of his management style is
summed up by the phrase with which he signs all his e-mail, Please remember
this, it is rarely, if ever “I,” and almost always “we.”
He recently finished a 6 month consultancy with Workplace Fairness where he
led an organizational effort to create a “Workplace Bill of Rights.”
Previously, Tom served as the CEO/Executive Director of the United
Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF), in Pittsburgh, PA.
He went to UMDF after having served almost ten years as the Executive
Director of The International Dyslexia Association (IDA). In his ten years
with the organization, Mr. Viall helped to broaden IDA from a relatively
small professional society to one that was focused on the comprehensive
concerns and needs of individuals with dyslexia. During his tenure,
membership in IDA grew by nearly 60%, its financial support doubled, and a
new international structure welcomed “National Affiliates” into the
Association. With support from an all-volunteer Board of Directors, Mr.
Viall led IDA toward increased advocacy and legislative activity.
Previously, Mr. Viall served as the Executive Director of The International
College of Surgeons (ICS), in Chicago, IL and as Executive Director of the
Sister City Program, Office of the Mayor of New York, during the Koch
administration. Mr. Viall has also done fundraising work for Save the
Children and Thirteen/WNET (NYC’s major public television station).
Mr. Viall holds a B.A. and M.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University (NJ) and
has done doctoral work at Columbia University (NYC). He taught in public and
private schools from elementary grade levels through university and has
tutored emotionally disturbed and learning disabled youth.
Mr. Viall is married to Linda S. Stricker (also a senior executive in the
non-profit sector), has two talented daughters by a previous marriage, and
lives in New Market, MD. Interests include golf, tennis, gardening, and an
admitted obsession with the writings of Carl Hiaasen.
