There will never be a way to tell preconception, because PE is specific to that particular combination of genes. Some women develop it just because the placenta goes rogue and mutates after it implants to a form of trisomy that directly turns up production of the chemicals that cause PE symptoms.

The blood tests that are in process in the US and are available in Europe will be a comparison between first bloods and 24 week bloodwork levels of sFlt-1 and sEng and the rate at which they are changing. They will only predict onset before 34 weeks. At any time in pregnancy they will be able to confirm PE by comparing current bloods to first pregnancy bloods.

Onset after 34 weeks isn't a really big clinical problem, though, so long as it is diagnosed, because the vast vast majority of deliveries at that age leave everyone *still alive* -- so long as they are diagnosed. Hopefully this will let those at high risk of early onset move to high-risk care and get steroids and very close monitoring and timed delivery with tertiary care for the baby once it's delivered.

Yes it is while you are pregnant and I believe the testing is done in the beginning of the 2nd trimester.

Can someone clarify this-the test is done once you are pregnant correct? There is nothing out there that will tell you before you are pg that you will get it again correct. I am hoping for a crystal ball that will tell me IF I will get it again. That is the biggest hold up with my DH as he won't do IVF unless he knows 100% that we won't have another 28weeker. Thanks girls.

I know that it is available in other countries...but that does not help us out now does it! ;) I believe that within the next year they are hoping to have the test out.
