Hi, here is a link to a thread talking about the so-called two year (postpartum) window you might be interested in: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=45487&p=353249&hil ... ar#p353249

This isn't something easy to study- how would they control for pregnancy interval in a group of women with a history of pre-e HELLP? I have a feeling some women will still have changes in spiral arteries much farther out.

Thank you for that - despite all the reading I've done on HELLP since having it, I've never heard of some of those things mentioned! Do you happen to know if the two-year window starts at delivery? If I were to get pregnant within the next few months, they would be just about two years apart. I'd prefer that the window just be from birth to conception, of course =). Then we'd be at about 16 months (if we get pregnant quickly).

Welcome to the forums. Congrats on your pregnancy! It has to be nerve wracking to to have the URQ pain so early. All of the doctors I spoke with said that HELLP and the associated liver pain go away after delivery. I had pain for a while after delivery, but it was minor and almost completely gone by about 6 months after delivery. It is extremely uncommon (if not unheard of) for HELLP to occur 8 weeks into a pregnancy. That said, it is probably a good idea to discuss it with your doctor. They may want to get baseline labs and check your labs regularly for peace of mind. It could be tough to tell if you are developing HELLP if you already/always have the abdominal pain.

Is there any chance you could have something else going on? There are other liver or abdominal problems that could lead to the URQ pain. It might be good to rule those out or get diagnosed with something manageable. Good luck! I hope your doctors can figure this out so that you can enjoy some of this pregnancy.

First of all, best of luck with everything! I had HELLP with my last pregnancy as well, although mine presented much later in the pregnancy. I just reached 30 1/2 weeks with my second pregnancy and have been experiencing URQ pain since early in the second trimester. Like yours, it seems to come and go. My blood pressure has been up and down, but it has not yet reached the 140/90 mark. My doctor has ordered blood tests on 4 different visits to keep an eye on my liver enzymes. Despite the constant URQ pain, so far my enzymes have stayed normal. My doctor feels confident that it will get dramatically worse and/or we will see a jump in bp to let us know that we need to take action, so she is taking a cautious hands-off approach for now.

I can certainly sympathize with any anxiety you are feeling. It is really difficult to have this pain and know that it could just be 'residual' or the HELLP could return at any minute, especially because I know more about how serious the condition this time around. The good news is that you can apparently have the pain for quite a while and still keep growing your little loved one! Keep us updated....

HELLP Syndrome - 2nd Pregnancy RUQ Pain Early

I was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome in my last pregnancy at 17 weeks. My daughter is a year old now. When I was 17 weeks pregnant I got a severe headache which sent me to the ER. My blood pressure was 165/120. I had no history of blood pressure problems. I was admitted for further testing and they found my platelets were low. After a few days of being admitted I started to have pain in my right side and my liver enzymes became elevated. We decided to keep the pregnancy going as long as possible before I became too sick. We did labs everyday to monitor the trends, treated the RUQ pain with pain meds, and basically set around and waited. I was hospitalized for 180 days and my daughter made it full term. Crazy, I know. After delivery my liver enzymes shot up higher and I had to stay in the hospital for a few more days. I ended up begging them to let me leave with the promise of visiting my doctor for labs everyday until they went down. After a month or so they went into the normal range. My blood pressure never recovered and I have remained on blood pressure medication.

Fast forward a year. I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child. We always wanted another one but the timing was a bit unexpected. My doctors plan is to closely monitor and keep me on blood pressure medication and try to avoid the hospital if at all possible. A couple of days ago I felt that dreaded RUQ for the first time since my last pregnancy. It is not constant but has happened twice now and lasts until I wake up the next morning. It is extremely uncomfortable and i can feel it in the front all the way through my back under my right breast. I am afraid to talk to my OB just yet because I dont want to set off alarms that HELLP is going to be in our future. I can bear the pain. I want this baby to have a chance.

Has anyone experienced residual liver pain after HELLP Syndrome or had pain in first trimester before onset of HELLP syndrome?
