Pre-e Baby: A gift after sister's murder

My sister was found murdered in an alley on June 24, 2015 at 1:30 a.m. I was five months pregnant with my baby girl. I had just found out I was having a baby girl the day before my sister was murdered.

My sisters name was Alicia Faith Todd and she was 21-years-old when she was murdered. We were two years apart and we were each other’s world. I truly believe that God doesn’t make mistakes and that's why he gave me my baby girl, because he knew he had to take my sister.

swollen feetIt was a hot summer that year and, like many pregnant women, my feet swelled up and trying to maintain the extra baby weight and the summer can be grueling. Once my sisters body was given to the mortuary, I spent five hours with the morticians, I wanted to be there for her in the end. After we buried my sister, I was never completely the same. I use to look out the window and cry. I use to cry for hours, I cried so hard I couldn’t breath and my chest would tighten up. I never realized that my blood pressure was rising. My urine had a distinct smell and sex became painful. I had lost my job three weeks before my sisters murder, and I had no insurance.

The pain became unbearable and my husband and I went to Urgent Care. My blood pressure was 183/100, I won’t ever forget the look on the doctors face. He said “You need to go to the emergency immediately, your blood pressure is too high and you can have stroke and/or lose the baby.” That alarmed me and soon enough I went to the ER, just for them to first reprimand me about my situation but then have sympathy for me once I told them my sister was murdered. They told me I would be there for a month.

My sisters two month death anniversary passed and my blood pressure went back up, I had to have an emergency C-section. The doctors tried to induce me at 30 weeks and 5 days, but my daughter was “breeched”, and even though they tried an inversion, my Melanie NICUstubborn baby didn’t want to move. My C-section was performed early morning on August 25, 2015. I gave birth to a 3 pound 16 ounce and 18 inch baby. Her father was scared to hold her but he went with the doctors to make sure she was okay. By the grace of God I recovered well from my surgery.

Melanie was in the NICU for a month, I felt guilty as a mother. I felt like I didn’t try hard enough to keep her in full - term. My husband reminds me constantly that I did the best I could. After a month in the NICU, we were able to take our five pound healthy baby home.

A month later, I developed post-partum depression and had a very hard time. I loved my daughter but losing my sister and becoming a new mom wore on me. I eventually went to grief therapy and let it all out.

My husband came with me for a session or two so he could hear me out and have a different perspective on how to help me. A9706C0D-178A-4D67-ACAB-CDC288B8B94DAfter four months my milk dried up in my breast and Melanie was on special formula to help her.

Melanie is now an active 3-year-old toddler who loves to sing, dance, play and is such a beautiful human being and my motivation to live and take care of myself. As of me I received my AA (2016) and my BA (2018). This is my testimony to anyone to let you know that God is able! He is alive and living and no matter what your circumstances he will see you through.
