Raising awareness takes many forms

“A little awareness goes a long way.” – Ben Heller

When Amanda and Ben Heller lost their son Thomas to HELLP syndrome 13 years ago, they turned to the Preeclampsia Foundation for support. They had never heard of HELLP syndrome at the time and felt blind-sided by this pregnancy complication that took their son’s life.

“A little awareness goes a long way,” said Ben. “I think if we were more aware, we may have gone to the doctor sooner and this may have been avoided.

This desire to raise awareness about preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome drives the Hellers to host a “fun” fundraising event every year in their son’s memory. It’s a pig roast affectionately known as Hoggin’ with the Hellers on their farm property in New Hampshire, and the proceeds benefit the Preeclampsia Foundation.

“People really come together for this cause; it allows a forum for people to talk about this difficult topic,” said Ben. “We planted a tree in memory of Thomas that first year and it grows every year – it’s a great reminder about what we’re raising money for, our lost babies and moms.”

The Hellers keep the event casual with the motto Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies. “We hand out educational materials from the Preeclampsia Foundation to raise awareness,” said Ben. “It’s an easy way to prevent awkward conversations for folks who don’t know what to say.”

“This event has been a huge success year after year, and has helped us honor Thomas,” said Ben. “We make it bigger and better every year, and are grateful for our community’s support.”

Amanda and Ben remain as dedicated as ever to supporting the Preeclampsia Foundation’s mission. They join us in asking for your support. Please help us create a brighter future for families by making a gift to the Preeclampsia Foundation.

Moms and babies are depending on us – and we’re depending on you. As we enter the season of giving, your year-end gift will guarantee that we can continue to move forward with our shared mission. Give the Gift of Life => http://bit.ly/pf3-give   As the nation’s only patient advocacy organization dedicated to preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, moms and babies are depending on us to save them from these hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Your generosity helps us advocate for policies and practices to prevent maternal and infant deaths and illnesses, educate and support our community, and fund research to find a cure.
