HELLP and What It Means to Me

At the beginning of the year I was surprised and shocked to learn I was pregnant again. After my fourth child I had my tubes tied, so I was surprised to say the least. After the shock wore off and the excitement set in, I was told my blood pressure was starting to creep up like it had with my third child; preeclampsia was feared.

If I had to choose, I would have chosen preeclampsia. I had only just learned what HELLP was. Shortly after my blood pressure continued to climb, I started swelling, seizures started and not big obvious ones, little ones that happened only in my face then gradually got worse; organ distress set in my liver, kidneys, pancreas, and heart.

Then one fateful night my blood pressure spiked to a 210/190 and unfortunately the only treatment was to deliver my baby. So at 15 weeks I delivered a tiny little one. I was told a few days after I should be returning to normal. A few days turned into weeks for my body to recover. And even now I have weekly headaches and slightly elevated bp. This is my story.
