Time Saves Lives

I was 16 years old and pregnant. I had just turned 17 before I delivered. It was my first pregnancy, I didn't know what to expect or what was normal.

I was on bed rest some and had a home health aide that came to help me during the day because I was so sick I had actually lost weight in the beginning. I was only about 85 lbs to start at so not alot of room to be losing weight.

I thought everything was pretty normal with my pregnancy, they did however find out that I had abnormal cervical cells through a pap test. I had to wait until after I delivered to have those removed. The Dr. said my pregnancy might have saved my life, because it was pretty bad when they caught it.

I went into labor one night after walking the mall with my mom. I would say I was as nervous as the next person, no more... But I started feeling really funny, like kinda light headed. I looked at my mom because I got really anxious as if I knew something was very wrong with me, but I didn't know what... I remember raising my arm up in the air and my mom looked at me and said, "Melissa, put your arm down honey." I said very anxiously, "I CAN'T MOM."

I knew then something very bad was happening to me. I don't know what happened after that only through what my mom told me afterwards. She said I began flopping around and she was a CNA so she called "NURSE STAT"... she said its the most horrific thing you could witness, your pregnant daughter flopping on the hospital bed. I don't remember any of that part, thank goodness... the Dr told her that she did not have to tell me any of it as I probably wouldn't remember.

The next thing I know is they are waking me up telling me its time to have a baby... I was so tired, exhausted, I had no more energy to push out a baby. I remember at one point they said if I didn't get to pushing harder, I would have to have a c-section. I didn't want that at all so I did as much as I could. They had to get the forceps out to help me but I finally did it. He was a healthy baby boy weighing 7 lbs 9 oz which was a big baby for me!

I did have some high blood pressure when I was admitted but they did not seemed concerned about it, even when my mom brought it up to them. I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, though they aren't sure which one. I know people try to link stuff together, so I am not sure where this fits in or if it does. I hope my story touches someone out there.
