I had taken my blood pressure at a local grocery store and it was 158/70, abnormal for me. I didn't feel well that day, Saturday, Easter weekend. On Monday I went to work as normal performing my physical therapy duties, although I didn't feel 100%. I had to talk to one of the physicians about a patient I was treating and while I was waiting had the nurse take my blood pressure, which was 180/102. I decided to have another nurse take it and it was 186/120. I came back to the clinic and called my doctors office and they called me back within a 1/2 hour. In the meantime my co-workers continued to monitor my symptoms until I heard from my doctors office. At this time I was totally unaware of what was happening or about to happen since it was my first pregnancy. The doctors office called and told me to come in right away. My husband came and got me and when I arrived they put the baby on a heart monitor for about an hour. The doctor came in and told me he was admitting me. I was admitted to perinatal intensive care and the process began. It was critical situation and they decided to perform a c-section that evening. My blood pressures continued to soar and they had no choice. My daughter was born Easter Monday at 8:01pm. I didn't get to see her for 5 days because I was still on magnesium sulfate to prevent seizures and also on other IV's. My husband would see her daily and bring pictures down to me. I was scared for her and myself because she was in NICU for over a week. I was in ICU for about a week and she was in NICU/PCU for 18 days. We are both home now and she weighs 6lbs 7 oz to this day. At birth she was 4 lbs 11oz and 17 1/2 inches long and born at 34 weeks. Although it was a scary process we are both doing well. She is on a heart monitor due to her Apnea, which is common in premature babies. She will eventually grow out of this. I consulted my physician about this occuring again and he said there is a 10% chance this will occur in my second pregnancy. The only symptoms I had were swelling. I weighed 138 at 34 weeks. I weighed the same the day after delivery. I was in pretty good shape and always had blood pressures of 116/75 give or take 2 or3 above and below. The physicain said this occurred quick with me and in a matter of just a few days. I'm happy that I had the care that I did and can't thank the staff that took care of me and my daughter enough for all they did for us. My husband is very grateful the outcome was what it was knowing what could of happened if I ignored my mininmal symptoms on that Easter Monday.
