I waited until everything was in place in my life prior to getting pregnant. Our plan was to have a family of 3 children. I was 26 years old when I got pregnant, several months after having a full physical and being pronounced healthy. This is my story. I had the perfect pregnancy, not a moment of morning sickness, no complaints. Early on in the pregnancy there was some excitement while we waited for a ultrasound because the doctor thought we may have a multiple birth. When the ultrasound was performed it was just one large baby. My ultrasound provided a due date of March 28th, which worked perfectly with when I missed my first period. My symptoms started on March 8th, while... Read More

My pregnancy went so well until about my 7th month. Then my ankles swelled to the size of canteloupes! My doctor could not detect any problem, so she just put me on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy, which didn't last long. On August 26, 2002, I went into labor. My baby wasn't due until October of 2002. I have never been more scared in my life. This was my first pregnancy, and we were at the hospital almost two months early! My daughter came out okay though, weighing in at 4 pounds 4 ounces. Although she was tiny, she had no health problems. I, on the other hand, began having seizures. A few hours after delivering, my blood pressure bottomed out and then sky-rocketed, causing... Read More

On August 23 in a city just north of Toronto, my daughter-in-law, Julie Little, gave birth to twin boys, Connor at 6lbs 9oz and Evan at 4lbs 5 oz. Hellp syndrome was discovered that day. She was monitored in the hospital and on August 28th, she became delerious and was sent to the Critical Care Unit in that hospital at 2:30 am. By 9:30 they had decided to send her to Toronto for a Blood plasma transfusion. She did not leave the smaller hospital till 2:30 pm and subsequently, upon arrival in the Toronto hospital, had a seizure and died. Now my son and his brother-in-law are caring for the babies. We (the family) cannot figure out how this tragedy could occur while Julie was being... Read More

I was 26 years old and looking forward to the birth of our first child. My symptoms of Preeclampsia start in my second trimester, with swollen ankles. The next time I went to the Doctor my blood pressure was up. It kept rising with each visit. I'd say I was about 32 weeks along when I became more apprehensive about my condition; My ankles and legs were huge and I was having headaches, but the doctor didn't seem too worried. So I just decided I should calm down. I continued to have tons of headachesand the swollen ankles/legs, but my fingers were also swollen now. In about my 35th week I went in for my normal check up and my Blood Pressure was even higher, so my doctor said to come in... Read More

Just this year I had my son in May. I never thought I could get preeclampsia. Hear is my story. I went to work on my usual day, but I had a doctor''s appointment. I went to it not thinking I would have to be induce that same day. I was 37 weeks along, technically that isn''t early, but still I was worried that something could be really wrong. The reason why my doctor sent me to be induce, (not knowing before), that the horrible swelling in my feet and ankles and my gaining more weight than recommended were signs of this horrible disease. The other symptoms of preeclampsia, I never really had, yeah I had headaches, but they went away... ... Read More

I had pre-eclampsia with my daughter when I was 21 years old, at about 6 months into the pregnancy my feet swelled up so bad that they cracked, and they bled. My feet looked like two big footballs. It was so embarrassing because people would stare at my feet and legs, some people would even laugh. I was so swollen it hurt to even move. My hands began to swell and crack open between my fingers too. I went in to see my obstetrician not thinking anything about it and when she saw how swollen I had become in a week she admitted me into the hospital. In 1989, they made me sit on a hospital bed in the complete darkness to keep my blood pressure down for three... Read More

Posted On Monday, June 27, 2005 By

I was about 27 weeks along with my first pregnancy when I started showing signs of preeclampsia. It started with a rapid weight gain of about 15 pounds in one week, due to the swelling. At the time, my doctors just told me that it was a normal part of pregnancy and not to worry. I knew my blood pressure had been elevated during a couple of appointments but it never occured to me that I could have preeclampsia. I found out later that there had been proteins in my urine as well. Three signs that I had preeclampsia. At 29 weeks I began to have migraine headaches but it still didn't occur to me that I could have preeclampsia. My childbirth educator recommended I see my OB/GYN for the... Read More

I have a cousin her name is Lina. She is 25 years old and got married on the 30th of August 2004. She was following up with a doctor (M.S.) that none of us felt well about. I had just had a baby last Jan 2005 and advised her to come with me to my doctor (S.A.) instead of hers, but she refused. When ever she felt anything like headaches or stomach aches, she used to ask her husband to call the Dr. M.S., and he used to answer her husband back screaming:

I had taken my blood pressure at a local grocery store and it was 158/70, abnormal for me. I didn't feel well that day, Saturday, Easter weekend. On Monday I went to work as normal performing my physical therapy duties, although I didn't feel 100%. I had to talk to one of the physicians about a patient I was treating and while I was waiting had the nurse take my blood pressure, which was 180/102. I decided to have another nurse take it and it was 186/120. I came back to the clinic and called my doctors office and they called me back within a 1/2 hour. In the meantime my co-workers continued to monitor my symptoms until I heard from my doctors office. At this time I was totally unaware... Read More

About one month into my pregnancy I started having morning sickness. That morning sickness never went away. Luckily my pregnancy was closely monitered due to a totally different set of circumstances. I had cervical cancer 10 years ago and the doctor was concerned that my cervix wouldn't hold the baby to term. Because of this, I was having frequent visits to the doctors office and ultra sounds. Every visit to the doctors office would consist of stopping in the bathroom to leave a urine sample. On one visit the nurse said I had "trace" amounts of protien in my urine. My blood pressure was normal (as it was prior to pregnancy)and every other test preformed also was normal. The doctor... Read More

My training as a Nursery Nurse saved my life and that of my baby. As part of our two year course, we had to visit a family. Christopher was two years old when I first met him. His mum had developed eclampsia at 30 weeks gestation. She was in a coma for 3 days and didn't even know that Christopher had been delivered until she saw his poloroid photo. I asked what her symptoms had been and all she was aware of was that she had swollen up a little bit in her face. When I was 30 weeks pregnant I noticed that my feet had swollen slightly. My boss at work said I had nothing to worry about and that I should just leave it. I knew that there was something wrong and bought forward my... Read More

I like many others had pre-eclampsia. I was a very healthy person with normal blood pressure. I also showed signs that my doctor had over looked, what she called weight gain wasnt it was in fact my body filling up with fluids. I also started getting the headaches which come from elevated blood pressure but they were tolerable so I never took it as a sign of any thing. At 27 weeks I went to the hospital where they took my blood pressure and it was 210/180 they freaked when they got that reading and all they keep saying was I should have been having a stroke. I also had proteins in my urine. They put me on some muscle relaxers to calm my body down. I was there for two day and had my son his... Read More

Posted On Saturday, September 06, 2003 By Julie

Even though this condition happen to me 21 years ago, I can close my eyes and it seems like yesterday. It was my husband's and my first pregnancy. I was in excellent health. My OB told me I was at a great age to be pregnant. I didn't smoke, drink, but perodically I ate one to many Snicker Bars. I didn't have any morning sickness but I did have intense heartburn throughout the pregnancy. I had never heard of this condition. My OB didn't educate me about this serious, life threatening condition, though he warned me about not handling the litter box! My husband was to take over that duty. Everything was fine, then at about seven months I had trouble getting my wedding ring off. My BP was... Read More

Posted On Friday, August 01, 2003 By Erica

It was really frustrating. My husband is a paramedic and we kept taking my blood pressure. It was steadily increasing. I was swelling (edema) and I felt terrible. My doctor wasn't taking us seriously. They NEVER checked my urine for protein. We kept telling her that my blood pressure was in the 140/90's, but everytime I was in clinic it was 120/80. Which still isn't normal. One day I woke up with a headache that wouldn't go away with tyenol. I went in to the hospital and was diagnosed with Severe Preeclampsia. It was really scary! Luckily my baby was healthy, early but healthy. I ended up being readmitted to the hospital a few days after I was discharged with a blood pressure of... Read More

Posted On Saturday, October 15, 2005 By

I, too, had two pregnancies due to preeclampsia. On my first one, I wasn't aware what preeclampsia was. The Dr. would constantly monitor my bp from 30 wks.of my pregnancy. I was also a little chunky back then. At at 38 wks. it was too high, so my Dr. admitted me to the nearest hspt. which they induce me. My daughter weighed at 7lbs &4 oz. She's now 7 yrs old and healthy. But I never figure out what caused it.Its a mystery. Five yrs later, I was pregnant with my second, and I weigh only 125lbs., I made my frequent ob/gyn visits. Then I was hit my preeclampsia sooner then my last one, my due date was July 7, 2003-the Dr. had to admit me to the hspt. earlier and gave I birth on June 11, 2005.... Read More
