Melbourne, Fla. – January 16, 2014 –The Preeclampsia Foundation announced today that its Illustrated Preeclampsia Symptoms Tear Pad has been officially included in the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) toolkit, which was announced by CMQCC today, to inform expectant mothers about the life-threatening disorder of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a severe obstetric condition characterized by high blood pressure, which left untreated, can lead to stroke, prematurity and death of women and babies. It is the second leading cause of maternal death in California, a state which has a half a million births per year.
The state’s data analysis found that maternal deaths due to preeclampsia have a good to strong chance of preventability if appropriate medical treatment begins in time. Public awareness and the education of pregnant women about the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia and the need to seek immediate medical evaluation is a shared priority of the Preeclampsia Foundation and CMQCC. The California toolkit is designed for healthcare providers and includes educational materials for healthcare providers and special educational materials for pregnant women and their families.
The Preeclampsia Foundation’s Illustrated Preeclampsia Symptoms Tear Pad is a patient education tool that was developed in collaboration with health services researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. The tool effectively informs pregnant women, even those with potentially poor literacy, about preeclampsia in a way that allows them to assimilate and retain the knowledge. They are therefore more likely to promptly seek medical attention should they have any of the symptoms.
Findings from a study published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (May 2012) and funded by the Preeclampsia Foundation, suggested that knowing the symptoms of this life-threatening disorder of pregnancy would help empower women to secure the care they need. The results of this study prompted the Foundation to mass-produce this educational tool in the form of a single-sided tear pad.
Eleni Tsigas, executive director of the Preeclampsia Foundation, said, “Both English and Spanish versions of the Illustrated Preeclampsia Symptoms Tear Pad will be distributed and used by hundreds of hospitals in California. We are very excited to put this evidence-based tool in the hands of all who provide prenatal care and counsel to pregnant women. Any healthcare providers, no matter where they are located, are welcome to order the tear pads from the Preeclampsia Foundation, for just the cost of shipping and handling. Simply go to www.preeclampsia.org/market-place to place your order.”
