Preeclampsia Foundation Cosponsors Congressional Briefing on Maternal Mortality in the U.S.

Last Updated on Monday, November 13, 2017

The Preeclampsia Foundation invites maternal health advocates and the public to attend a Congressional briefing on Maternal Mortality in the United States: Understanding the Problem and Finding Solutions on Wednesday, November 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in House Capitol Room 8 in Washington, DC. This briefing will be held in cooperation with Congresswomen Jaime Herrera Beutler and Lucille Roybal-Allard, Co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Maternity Care.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the statistics on maternal death in the U.S. are staggering. More women in the U.S. die from pregnancy complications than in any other developed country. Since 2000, the U.S. has seen a 26% increase in the maternal mortality rate – this rate is three to four times higher for black women.

This briefing will bring statistics and stories together to paint a clearer picture of maternal mortality in the U.S., and focus on what Congress can do to address it.

Speakers include:

  • Haywood Brown, MD, FACOG, president, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
  • Eleni Tsigas, chief executive officer, Preeclampsia Foundation
  • Wanda Barfield, MD, MPH, CAPT, USPHS, director, Division of Reproductive Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Larry Bloomstein, physician and patient advocate profiled on NPR and ProPublica
  • Cindy Pellegrini (moderator), senior vice president of public policy, March of Dimes

In addition to the Preeclampsia Foundation, other sponsors of this briefing include the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, March of Dimes, and Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
