Summary of H.R.669
Sudden Unexpected Death and Data Enhancement and Awareness Act
On September 9, 2014, the U.S. House passed legislation titled the Sudden Unexpected Death and Data Enhancement and Awareness Act (H.R. 669) introduced by the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Rep. Peter King (R-NY). The legislation provides for activities to help improve the understanding of stillbirth, sudden unexpected infant death, and sudden unexplained death in children. In relation to stillbirth, the legislation would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to:
- Award grants for surveillance efforts on stillbirths, utilizing existing surveillance systems such as NVSS.
- Develop public education and prevention programs to reduce stillbirths and address the racial and ethnic disparities in occurrence.
- Develop and conduct public education and prevention programs and establish a task force aimed at reducing stillbirths.
The legislation does not provide any additional funding for HHS agencies to carry out the programs authorized in the bill. The legislation has not passed the Senate at this time.
