Totally Surprised

Totally Surprised

This was my first pregnancy and there was no sign of any issues at any of my doctor's appointments. I'm generally a very healthy person and stay in pretty good shape. At 39 weeks and 1 day I started feeling just generally crappy. My belly hurt and I was uncomfortable, but not having any contractions. As I was getting ready to call my doctor to see what might be causing this, my water broke so we headed to the hospital. When I got to the hospital they asked me if I had any blood pressure issues during the pregnancy or before and I said that I've never had blood pressure issues. Then they told me that it was 190/110 and I was shocked. And later when the checked my urine, my protein level was one of the highest the doctor had ever seen. They started me right away on magnesium and other medications to get my blood pressure down. By then I started having a few contractions on my own, but nothing consistent. They decided to induce me. By the time I got to 9cm dilated my baby's heart rate started to drop so they took me off of it and my contractions slowed back down to every 3 to 5 minutes. Then I started pushing and the contractions still were not very consistent. We did have to use the vacuum to get him out since his heart rate kept dropping with each contraction.

Thankfully he was a healthy baby boy!

I had to stay on the mag for 24hrs after birth (which made breastfeeding fun) and then another 24 after that. My blood pressures were good when I left and they prescribed Labetalol for me to take for 30 days.
2 days after we came home I started to feel like I was getting the flu. I was achy and crampy and had a slight fever. I called my doctor worried that I might get my baby sick and they told me that it was most likely blood pressure related and that I needed to go back to the hospital. On the way there my cramps intensified and felt like I was having one giant contraction and then I got a headache that felt like my heart was pounding in my head. When we got to the hospital my blood pressure was back at 190/110. They treated it the same way again and my pressures were back to normal when I went home 2 days later.

We did have some issues figuring out the correct medication dosage because I started having low blood pressure issues at home. We decided to go off of it after 3 weeks and then I felt much better.
