Hellp Syndrome

Hellp Syndrome

To begin with i had Hypermesis throughout my entire pregnancy and it felt like hit after hit day by day and near the end I was just looking forward to the birth and my son being here. At 36 weeks they found protein in my urine when I went in for reduced movements, BP was borderline, so they monitored me closely. 37 weeks was the same. They would do repeated bloods and urine tests. At 38 weeks the bloods showed some mild changes and I was diagnosed with mild pre eclampsia and they scheduled an induction for 39 weeks. 2 days prior to induction date I saw my midwife- I had a lot of protein in my urine based on the dipstick- the colour change was very rapid. She thankfully sent us to the hospital that day. When the hospital did bloods they noticed they had deteriorated slightly- these were taken about noon time. I was admitted and to have my induction the next day.

By 4am they did some more bloods- and a couple hours later I was checked by a doctor who saw my reflexes were now being affected, and from my blood results there were liver changes and my platelets had halved from the day prior. I had HELLP syndrome, less than a week after being diagnosed with mild pre-e. They moved me into a 1:1 observation. I was 1cm- so they just broke my waters without gel. I went on a magnesium drip- this felt like genuinely being set on fire and I threw up I've never felt like that. I had so many wires coming out of me, 3 drips in one hand, 2 catheters, urinary catheter, blood pressure cuff, fetal Scalp electrode as mine and babies heart rate were the same rates, a 12 lead ECG, and probably others im forgetting. I got bloods every couple hours and definitely wasn't easy to get bloods from. 12 hours later I hadn't progressed and the pain was immense- contractions back to back and I was screaming out on every breath even with gas and air and Tens machine. My platelets were borderline the level that c section is taken off the table pretty much due to risk of bleeding out. There was a small window of opportunity so I went for it. I couldn't have Epidural or spinal due to the hellp syndrome so was put under general anaesthesia and I couldn't see the birth of my child. Lost 800mls of blood but didn't need a platelet transfusion in the end but when they wheeled me into theatre I wasn't sure if I was making it out of that room alive. We did all make it out thankfully.

Was still 1 on 1 care for a couple days, and baby had pneumonia- but didn't need NiCU and was able to be kept with me. 6 days later we were birth discharged and able to go home.
