An OB Who I Never Met Saved My Life

An OB Who I Never Met Saved My Life

August 28, 2012 will be a day my family or I will never forget. My second pregnancy I hit 12 weeks. Every morning I would wake up to my hands and feet swelling really bad. I would go into my maternal check ups and explain to my OB my symptoms. He would check my blood pressure and have me take 24 hour urines. All came back normal. Since I had no other symptoms, my doctor told me to lay on my left side and I would be fine. My pregnancy continued; now with swelling not only in my hands and feet but with in my eyes now every morning. Still no high blood pressure and a normal urine screen. Doctor told me the swelling was normal. Fast forward to 34 weeks pregnant, I have this headache; I mean this headache given from Satan himself. No medicine could take it away. It was blinding me. I could only see spots. I skipped calling my OB and call the Hospital instead. The hospital told me I needed to come in now to get checked. When I arrived at the hospital they hooked me up to the blood pressure cuff and started taking my urine. Hours later I was woken by a room full of nurses and doctors who told me I was in organ failure and needed to deliver now. I got to the C-section room and as I go to lay down to deliver; my blood pressure shot up to 210/190. I hear the doctor say, "look at her pressure we need to work quick" . That is the last thing I remember. I had a seizure on the C-section table while my baby was still inside of me. I was dying. I woke up the ICU and that is where I stopped breathing due to congestive heart failure. After I was stable the doctor explained to me everything that happened. I had untreated preeclamspia and I almost died many times through out that day. I was told I was lucky I didn't have a stroke. I didn't get to see my baby for almost 2 weeks due to being in the ICU. Nurses and family members would bring me pictures of him. But it wasn't the same. The doctor on call that day never treated me during my pregnancy but she is the reason me and my child are alive today. I will never forget the angel in scrubs that day. I think of her every time my son blows out birthday candles.
