I had an uncomplicated pregnancy all the way till 36 weeks gestation. In fact 4 days before my emergency c-section I had an appointment with my OB, no concerns were raised and my blood pressure was perfect. The only symptom I had were swollen feet and fatigue but those are normal at that stage of pregnancy. Fast forward to 4 days later, I started to experience pain in my right abdominal area. I thought it was just a mix of my baby kicking my ribs (since she preferred my right side) and some indigestion from what I ate at lunch time. Around 8 pm my husband came home and I was in immense pain, he decided to call labor and delivery to find out if we should go in. While on the phone with a nurse I had a seizure, he hung up and called 911. About 10 minutes later the firefighters and paramedics showed up, while they were getting my history I had another seizure much bigger than my last one. From that point on I don’t remember much. At 1:00 am they took her to the NICU because she turned purple. At this point I am still in shock from what has happened to me and my baby. The next morning my OB informs me that I suffered from Eclampsia that then turned into HELLP syndrome. That was the first time I had heard of either of those two conditions. She explained what they were and informed me she was surprised when she came in that morning and read my chart as I had no symptoms. I went on to being hospitalized for 6 days to control my blood pressure and my other levels. My baby had to be in the NICU for 12 days where she learned how to eat and not aspirate. It was a wild ride, I wish I had been told to that any abdominal pain on the right side in pregnancy is a concern and that I should go straight to labor and delivery if you have that symptom. If I’d known I probably wouldn’t have had any seizures but what ifs aren’t important. All that matters is that I had a great medical team that was able to save my life as well as my baby’s life.
I didn’t have the most classic of symptoms with my preeclampsia. If I had not been in tune with my body and very cautious medically - m...
