The Swelling That Changed My Life

The Swelling That Changed My Life

I was 28 weeks when I noticed swelling in my feet and on fingers. My wedding band was very tight. I thought this doesn't feel right. I am a nurse and I had to go to work that morning. I called my mom and said I was feeling very tired and that my feet and fingers have swollen. She asked me to check my BP and do a urine test. I didn't a have monitor at home, so I went to work as usual and explained to my colleague on my way to work. She had preeclampsia, she saw it right away. As soon as I walked into the unit, she took the BP monitor and checked my BP it was 170/110. They thought the BP monitor was not right and took another machine and checked it again, the reading was same. I could see everybody panicking, but I didn't understand what was happening around me. I said I will check the urine, when I checked protein was 3+. I knew this was wrong but still I was not getting into the feeling of house serious things were. I phoned the maternity unit and told them. They took me straight away. Then BP started to go up, protein became 4+. I saw everybody running around and then they said they have to start me on magnesium sulphate, and said they will have to deliver the baby as the BP was not getting under control. I lost it there. I didn't realise preeclampsia which I have heard , was what's happening to me . They gave me magnesium, I thought I was dying and gave me dexa. Blue lighted me to tertiary care hospital. They wanted to try to keep the baby in womb as long as possible. But on second day, I saw the floaters which they always used to tell me to watch for. My BP went up and heart rate went down along with my babys. They did an emergency C-section to save us both. My baby was in the NICU for 80 days. I was treated for my BP and was on medication, currently not on any but monitoring. My condition was described as severe preclampsia. They did placental examination and found that it was an ischemic placenta with maternal malperfusion.

I would have been more prepared or watched over myself if I knew more about this. I had no history of BP, this was my second pregnancy. And I didn't have any symptoms, just feeling tired.
