I became pregnant at 41 and barring a subchorionic bleed at 6weeks gestation, my entire pregnancy was healthy. At 34weeks gestation (and on a Friday), I visited my OBGYN for my regular check up and discovered my blood pressure was elevated. He told me to keep an eye on it over the weekend, but was extremely casual and didn’t detail at what reading I should seek help. On the Sunday evening I went to bed and got up a couple of hours later because our fridge door had mysteriously opened and was beeping. At 1:30am, I took my blood pressure and saw that it was 159/109. I actually felt completely fine and could’ve easily gone back to bed, but out of an abundance of caution (and a google search) we decided to head to the hospital to get it checked out. Upon arrival it had crept up to 169/109 and I was admitted immediately. It continued to rise and was 200/118 at its worst. I had developed severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Alarmingly, bar the clinical readings, I had no symptoms and felt absolutely fine. My daughter was delivered that morning by emergency c-section and spent 13 days in the NICU. I spent 6 days in hospital. We’re both extremely lucky to be here.
