Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia

My name is Michaela. At 32 weeks I went in for my normal checkup. When they checked my blood pressure it was 140/90. My doctor was concerned so he ordered blood work to see if there was protein in my urine, and I got a call the next day that there was. The week prior I had been throwing up, which was not normal because my pregnancy had been going so smoothly. The headache I was experiencing was so severe I felt like my eyes were gonna pop out. I thought at the time they were all pregnancy symptoms. I was told I was going to need to start doing stress tests twice a week. I went for my first test, and they gave me my first steroid shot and sent me home with blood pressure meds. At first it was mild preeclampsia. Over the weekend it continuously went up. By Sunday my blood pressure was 197/112. My husband rushed me to the hospital during a snow storm. I was told that day I would not be going home, I was going to be airflighted to a bigger hospital and I was put on the mag drip. I made it to the hospital and spent 2 weeks in the postpartum unit until I was 34 weeks along, then the were going to Induce me. At 34 weeks they set an induction date and during the day before my nurse forgot my blood pressure medicine, so they sent me over to labor and delivery. They had told me my baby was breech so they were gonna do a c section, but unfortunately my nurse had also provided me with a sandwich. They waited until the next day to see if he had flipped and he had. They began with the normal process: pitocin and the foley balloon. My Dr came that evening after I finally chose to get an epidural and the balloon had come out. She asked if she could break my water and when she did my babies cord prolapsed. I was rushed to have an emergency c section. I ended up losing a lot of blood and had to be given 2 units of blood and put on the mag drip. My blood pressure dropped so they took me off my medicine, a few days later it went right back up. They were finally able to get my bp stabilized and I stayed in the Ronald McDonald’s house. My baby was in the nicu for 3 weeks. I tell people my story because when preclampsia creeps up it creeps up fast. It’s something I pray never happens to anyone, but I believe there needs to be more awareness on the dangers of preclampsia. I want other mothers to know they are not alone, and to never feel afraid to reach out and seek help for mental supper after you give birth. I hope my story is able to help someone, and to remember they are not alone.
