Preeclampsia and NICU During Pandemic

April 2020, about a month after our statewide shutdown started, I was in the hospital at 32 weeks for severe preeclampsia. The plan was induction. They put me on magnesium and warned me how hot I may start to feel. Right about the time I started to feel hot and the drs hit a shift change. New ones come in and take my vitals. My temp was 100.4 and the dr and nurses lost their educational backgrounds and thought it had to be Covid. They immediately put me in the Covid unit, swab my nose and throw me in an emergency c section…. Upon waking up the next morning still in the Covid unit, I asked if I was positive. They said no! I lost it and demanded to be moved out of the unit! When it was time to go to the NICU and meet out first born child, we were informed only mothers allowed in the NICU, period. After a 30 day NICU stay I brought my daughter home and she met her daddy for the FIRST time. They would not allow him in the NICU or the hospital after delivery. He never laid eyes on her or held her until the day she came home. It was the most heartbreaking experience I’ve ever faced and I was forced to go through postpartum preeclampsia with 3 readmissions and a NICU stay completely alone as they wouldn’t allow my husband in the hospital after delivery. Because they rushed my csection and assumed I had covid, they did a sloppy job.. I ended up having blood left inside me which caused my incision to open, and several readmissions ontop of preeclampsia readmissions. I had to have it cut open AGAIN and had to heal with a wound vac. It was the most traumatic experience I’ve ever been through and they forced me to go through this, and the NICU 100% alone. I wouldn’t wish this experience on my worst enemy.

UPDATE: my daughter is 15 months old and thriving. No long term health conditions thus far. I still suffer from ptsd and high blood pressure. Thanks for reading our story.
